Lyn Selby: Lawyer and Director

I grew up in the small town of Sawtell situated close to Coff’s Harbour on the far north coast of NSW. I attended boarding school in Grafton for my secondary education and then commenced my General Nursing training at the Prince of Wales hospital at Randwick in Sydney. I loved it and it gave me great skills in meeting the needs of my patients and caring for my family.

Upon completion, I married and moved to Canberra and worked as a nurse and midwife for a number of years. We had 4 beautiful children but unfortunately my marriage ended after 13 years.

I then made the decision to pursue a career in teaching. I found shift work difficult as it impacted upon our family life and I wasn’t prepared to compromise it even further. Being a teacher had been my dream growing up and at the time it was the perfect solution for me raising my children as a single parent. I completed my degree and worked in secondary schools and was later appointed co ordinator in drama and music.

My divorce was messy and very painful although the bright light in all of this was that it planted the seed to consider a future in law. 7 years later, I made enquiries at Bond University on the Gold Coast and was offered a scholarship. I accepted this and completed my law degree in November 1997.

I commenced working with the Department of Prosecutions in Brisbane working in the area of Criminal Law. I remained there for 2 years and was admitted as a Barrister in June 1999. I then transferred to the Crown Law Department and worked mainly in the area of Child Protection and Child Abduction along with some civil litigation work.

In 2003 I moved to the Sunshine Coast. I worked as a barrister undertaking court work, settling court material and writing advices in matters such as Family Law, Property and Personal Injuries. In 2005 I decided to make the transition to solicitor with the goal of opening my own law firm. I made the change because I wanted more client contact and ability to work with clients throughout their matter, establishing a relationship rather than just being their voice in the court at the end of their journey. I worked in two family law firms on the Sunshine Coast until recently and have now realised my goal by opening Selby Legal in Buderim.

My background working with people from all walks of life is quite extensive and the skills I have developed through my different areas of work has made me a very experienced communicator with an insightful understanding of the needs of the individual, parents and children.
